One of the least known Australian musical traditions is that of the Stringbands of Darwin. Blending Filipino, Swing and Aboriginal influences, it was a popular dance music in Darwin from the 30s through till the 60s.The Teatree Waltz was collected by Jeff Corfield from the playing of mandolinist Val McGuiness of Darwin, who learnt the tune from Jaffar Ahmatt ( a musician of Filipino and Aboriginal background) of Thursday Island. The McGuiness family lived in both Nth Queensland and the Northern territory and seemed central to the string band players in Darwin. Hopefully Jeff will one day publish what information he has on this facinating music.
The Broughton Waltz is from the playing of Ted Vallance of St Arnaud, Victoria. Collected by Peter Ellis and published in Collectors Choice Vol 3
I know little about the Berrimal Waltz other than than the fact that Peter Ellis has published it in Collectors Choice. Peter got the Berrimal Polka from Ted Vallance and possibly this tune is from him as well
Jim McQueen was the grandfather of Harry McQueen of Castlemaine, Victoria and this is Jim McQueen's Valeta Waltz
